IgboFest Returns To Brooklyn Park Aug. 8 Celebrating Nigerian Culture

IgboFest celebrates its 31st year highlighting Nigerian culture on Saturday, Aug. 8, on the campus of North Hennepin Community College.

Hosted by the Umunne Cultural Association, attendees can experience traditional Igbo clothing, cuisine, music and cultural performances at this year’s festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Our culture is very dear to us that we like to preserve, we don’t want our culture to vanish. That’s why it is very important to us,” said Ikwuagwu Omeoga, chair of the Umunne Cultural Association.

The Igbo people are a major ethnic group native to southeastern Nigeria. Organizers of the celebration say it’s perfect way to learn about this unique and distinctive culture.

Among them is Gladys Eta, who owns Glamaur African Kitchen in Brooklyn Park. Eta will be serving up some of her specialty dishes.

“Culture is everything, and food is part of culture, so I’m always excited to be in IgboFest to showcase our Nigerian dishes,” said Eta.

IgboFest is free to attend and runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at North Hennepin Community College.
