Brooklyn Park Police: Two Children Injured in E-bike Crash with Vehicle

Two children were taken to the hospital by ambulance over the weekend after the e-bike they were riding collided with a car at a Brooklyn Park intersection, police said. 

The collision happened at around 3:10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Pearson and Sierra parkways, a neighborhood intersection in the southeast part of the city.

At last check, the children were listed in stable condition, police said. Their ages and the extent of their injuries were not initially released.

Brooklyn Park police said in a news release that the driver of the vehicle stayed and cooperated with the investigation.

Police also said there was no indication of drugs or alcohol that could have factored into the collision.

Under Minnesota law, a legal e-bike must not exceed 28 miles per hour nor have a motor that exceeds 750 watts of power. Age restrictions also apply. Legal e-bikes may not be operated by anyone under the age of 15.

According to the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, legislative efforts were made this year to amend e-bike laws.

Those included a proposed helmet mandate for youth riders and another proposed measure that would have allowed local municipalities to set e-bike speed limits. None of those measures passed, however.
