Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove Police Receive Job Training Funds
Local police departments are receiving help from the state to train more candidates and fill job vacancies.
“We need police officers on the street — we need to get them through schooling. We need to get them qualified. We need to get them passing their POST license test,” said Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Elliot Faust. “And it takes a lot of resources, and quite honestly it takes a lot of money. So it’s great the state is stepping up to help us out with that.”
Brooklyn Park is receiving $100,000 from the Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training (ICPOET) Grant Program.
The grant funding will help put two cadets through law enforcement training.
Inspector Elliot Faust of the Brooklyn Park Police Department believes the grant funding from the state will be beneficial in helping them fill police vacancies.
Brooklyn Park is one of 35 police departments across the state to benefit from the new grant program. The state allocated $2.5 million toward this initial cohort of candidates.
“So we’re super excited about the opportunity, and I think it’s going to continue to be a way for us to feed our officer pool because that’s really our No. 1 priority is getting more police officers on the street,” said Faust.
The Maple Grove Police Department also received $50,000 to train one cadet as part of an initial cohort of grant funding.
Another $2.25 million is available this summer for police departments interested in participating in the second cohort.
