9-year-old Boy Killed in Brooklyn Park Truck-Scooter Collision

A 9-year-old boy riding an electric scooter was fatally struck Friday afternoon, July 10, by a truck in Brooklyn Park, police said.

The incident happened at approximately 2 p.m. Friday in the intersection of Candlewood Drive and Brunswick Avenue North. That’s directly across the street from Hamilton Park.

According to Brooklyn Park police, the driver of a pickup truck pulling a trailer immediately called 911 and remained at the scene. 

“Officers noted no indications of impairment, and the driver is cooperating with the investigation,” read an initial press statement released by Brooklyn Park police Cmdr. Matt Rabe. 

Family members identified the child killed as 9-year-old Muad Mohamed. Police initially listed 8 years old as the boy’s age, but that has since been corrected to age 9.

Police described the incident as a “collision” between the truck and the child on the scooter. No arrests have been announced.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting Brooklyn Park police with accident reconstruction and the investigation remains ongoing. 

Brooklyn Park police later released a statement to media offering condolences to the family.

“Our heart goes out to the family of this young boy in their time of grief. We urge parents and youth to take the dangers of e-scooters and bikes seriously. Too many of our young people are harmed or taken from us too early because of accidents on these electric vehicles. Please talk to your children and keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.”
