Robbinsdale’s Sustainability Committee: Residents Working to Improve the City
Erin Hart joined Robbinsdale’s new sustainability committee in 2024.
“It’s all of our parts to step up and do the right thing, and, really it’s easy,” said Hart. “There’s so many ways that we can be involved doing things in our own home. There are a lot of different events throughout our community that the city make really easy to become involved in.”
The committee helps advise city staff and elected officials about efforts focused on sustainable practices and environmentally-friendly policies while also encouraging and helping organize events like the upcoming paper shredding event at the public works garage on May 10.
“These residents live here in Robbinsdale,” said the city’s sustainability coordinator, Kayla Kirtz. “They have that experience of living with each other and living in this community and knowing how our services and programs impact them and how they interact with the government, so they have that firs-thand experience and they’re able to provide that valuable perspective that city staff just may not be able to get.”
Another upcoming event the committee helped organize is a free compost giveaway. When you purchase a native plant kit from the city, Kirtz said you can bring a five-gallon bucket and they’ll fill it with compost.
“It’s understanding what is it that residents need to know, that they might have concerns about, and understanding how we meet them at where they’re at,” said Hart.
