Robbinsdale Prepares for New Tennis and Pickleball Courts
Heavy equipment and construction noise have taken over this corner of Robbinsdale.
But those sounds won’t last forever according to Matt Bazyk, the city’s recreation services manager.
“We’re at Sanborn Park here in Robbinsdale and we are looking over the soon-to-be tennis courts and pickleball courts,” says Matt Bazyk.

Construction workers work to prepare site of new tennis and pickleball courts.
In with the new, out with the old
Construction workers have been hard at work demolishing what used to be the old tennis courts to make room for two new dedicated tennis courts and two dedicated pickleball courts.
“Before were the old tennis courts, that were pretty torn up, entry points were pretty small, limited access for people say in a wheelchair and horseshoe pits that were used by little to none,” says Bazyk.
Robbinsdale received $80,000 in grant funding from the United States Tennis Association with contributions from both its national and northern sections to help cover the around $460,000 total price tag.
“They awarded us with 80 thousand dollars and so we were able to start that process this week, so on Monday they started tearing out the old courts,” says Bazyk.
Once complete, Sanborn Park will feature the city’s only dedicated public pickleball facilities.
“These will be the only dedicated pickleball courts in Robbinsdale that we have. We’ll have these two tennis courts along with the third tennis court at Manor when this project is done,” says Bazyk.
What’s next?
A few trees had to be removed for the project’s new footprint, but that is being addressed.
“The plan is to plant more trees. We have a fantastic forester, who is excited to plant trees here,” says Bazyk.
Officials say opening day is right around the corner.
“The full project is suppose to take six to eight weeks,” says Bazyk. “People should be able to use them this fall.”
Instead of construction noise, the sounds of game play will fill the park during regular operating hours.
“This project is important just to move forward with in Robbinsdale, pickleball is an up and coming sport so just getting regulation courts is a plus, people are very excited for that,” says Bazyk.
