Crystal Saving Money By Shortening Early Voting Window

Crystal Mayor Julie Deshler said the city will save money by following a new state law that narrows the window for early voting during the busy election season.

The precinct at city hall will now be open for early voting 18 days prior to the primary and general election (from July 24 to August 10 ahead of the August 11 primary and from October 16 to November 2 ahead of the November 3 general election). The city will accept absentee ballots by mail.

“It was two or three staff members full-time for those 40-plus days, to sit in a room, and there wasn’t very much activity, really, in terms of people coming in that early to vote. By pairing it down to 18 days, it still gives people an opportunity to come in and vote, but it saves us a significant amount of money from a staff perspective,” Mayor Deshler told CCX Media’s Dave Kiser during taping of the quarterly Mayor’s Minutes segment.

Deshler also reminded residents to participate in the city’s ongoing needs assessment survey for the park and recreation department.

“(It’s) just to get a sampling from our residents to see what kind of programs they’d like to see our recreational program create for future programming,” she said.
