Brooklyn Park’s Summer Blossom Awards Cultivates City Pride
A beautification effort in Brooklyn Park, known as Summer Blossom Awards Program, is growing strong.
Project Facilitator Josephine Thao says the annual competition is now in its 27th year.
It celebrates residents and businesses that put their green thumbs to work.
“We had a panel of judges that toured and evaluated over thirty properties this year alone,” says Thao.
Realife Cooperative of Brooklyn Park was one winner this year.

The independent living facility has a gardening committee that creates stunning floral displays and vibrant landscapes.
“There’s about ten members and each person is responsible for an area outside of the building and they get to add their own flair to it and make it their own, says Thao. “Collectively it really brightens other residents’ day.”
Realife Cooperative and other winners are recognized and rewarded by the city.
“The winners receive a monetary stipend to go toward gardening materials, an engraved paver, and formal recognition from our city council,” says Thao.
Thao hopes that by showcasing well-maintained homes and neighborhoods, the program will cultivate a sense of pride and connection.
“We know that properties that are invested in, that it encourages neighbors to also want to embody that and mirror that and just be proud that they are part of the neighborhood,” says Thao. “It’s also a great way to connect with neighbors and build relationships.”
