Construction of new tennis courts at Maple Grove High School is underway. The asphalt surface should be in place later this week if the weather cooperates.

Local ballplayers compete in all-star series
Several local prep baseball players from the northwest suburbs played three games each at the Play Ball! Minnesota All-Star series in Chaska over the weekend. Players from a handful of schools from the area where on the rosters of the Metro North and the Metro West teams. Metro West finished unbeaten to win the six-team tournament.

Horton is a finalist for Mr. Baseball
Maple Grove pitcher and first baseman Charlie "Bubba" Horton is one of seven finalists for Minnesota's Mr. Baseball Award. The award will be presented Sunday at Target Field.

Maple Grove's Huff is an NHL draft prospect
Recent Maple Grove High School graduate Sam Huff is ranked No. 131 among North American skaters for this weekend's NHL entry draft. Huff has committed to the University of Minnesota.

Youth track is a hit in District 279
While many high school sports have extensive feeder programs from the youth levels, track and field opportunities are more scarce for younger kids. This spring marked the first year for the District 279 youth track and field program, and it proved to be a hit.

Local stars set for All-Star baseball
The PlayBall Minnesota high school all-star baseball tournament is this weekend. Six teams of seniors from the class of 2017 representing their home areas will compete Friday and Saturday at Chaska Athletic Park.

Summer football at Osseo
The high school football season is still a couple of months away, but teams are now permitted a limited number of summer practice sessions. The Osseo Orioles are also taking part in a three-day camp at South Dakota State University.

Champlin Park falls in American Legion baseball
After finishing play in the high school season Friday, many of the Champlin Park varsity baseball players are playing American Legion baseball. The Rebels bats were mostly silent in a 3-0 loss to Fridley Tuesday night.

Burnham advances to MGA match play championship
Former Wayzata High School golf standout Sarah Burnham is having a great career at Michigan State. Burnham is home for the summer and Tuesday she advanced to the championship round of the 74th Minnesota Golf Association Women's Amateur Match Play championship.

Park Center has hired a new head girls basketball coach. Barb Metcalf spent the past nine years as the head coach at West Fargo High School.

Wayzata tops Maple Grove in consolation baseball
After each losing in the quarterfinals, the Wayzata and Maple Grove baseball teams bounced back with wins in the consolation bracket of the state Class AAAA tournament. The Trojans and Crimson met for the consolation title, with Wayzata winning 11-3.

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s boys lacrosse team built a 6-1 halftime lead and held on for a 6-5 win over Wayzata in the semifinals of the state tournament.

Wayzata boys golf wins state tournament
The Wayzata boys golf team won the seventh state championship in program history, edging Minnetonka by two shots. Wayzata senior Van Holmgren won medalist honors for the tournament shooting rounds of 72 and 71. The Trojans' top four players all shot 76 or better in the second round to secure the win.

The Maple Grove baseball team is set to begin play in the state Class AAAA tournament. The Crimson won the Section 8AAAA title by beating St. Michael-Albertville and will face Forest Lake in the state quarterfinals.

The Wayzata boys lacrosse team is set for Thursday's state semifinals after a hard-fought win over Eden Prairie in the quarterfinals. The Trojans beat the second-seeded Eagles 6-5.

Champlin Park set for wide-open state baseball tourney
The Champlin Park baseball team graduated 14 seniors from last year's state Class AAAA runner-up team, but the Rebels are back in the state tournament this season. They are the No. 3 seed for what looks like a wide open tournament with no team having fewer than five losses coming in.

The state high school golf tournaments are underway in Coon Rapids, Jordan, and Becker. The Wayzata boys are second in the Class AAA team competition after the opening round at Bunker Hills. Ben Frazzini of the Trojans is tied for second with a 71.

Hopkins, Wayzata boys; Armstrong girls place in top 5 track
Hopkins' Seth Eliason won the 1600 meter run Saturday at the MSHSL state track and field meet, helping the Royals' boys to place fourth in the Class AA meet. Alexandrea Hurst and Michaela Baker each had strong showings for Armstrong's girls, who placed fifth in Class AA.

Maple Grove senior Alex Miley won the boys 3200 meter run Friday morning while Osseo 8th grader Nyalaam Jok won the girls’ high jump on the first day of the state high school track and field meet.

Breck doubles team takes second
Breck freshmen Matthew and Thomas Metz finished second in the Class “A” boys tennis doubles competition losing 6-4, 6-4 to Blake’s Chris Hall and Ben Ingbar in the final. Blake’s Jack Barker beat teammate Joe Mairs in the Class “A” singles final.

Maple Grove beats St. Michael-Albertville to reach state baseball tournament
Maple Grove came into the Section 8AAAA baseball tournament final round without a loss in section play. Top seed St. Michael-Albertville beat the Crimson to force a second game for the championship, which Maple Grove won 11-5.

Champlin Park baseball advances to state
Cal Hanson's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Jack Snee with the winning run as the Champlin Park baseball team beat Mounds View 2-1 in the Section 5AAAA final, qualifying the Rebels for the state tournament.

Wayzata returns to state baseball after section final thriller
The Wayzata baseball team carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning of their Section 6AAAA baseball game Tuesday, only to see the Royals score three times in the top of the seventh. Wayzata responded with three runs of their own, including Bobby Isbell's game-winning hit that scored Charles Engdahl to give the Trojans a 7-6 win and the section championship.

Heritage beats Mounds Park; now in section final
Heritage Christian Academy erased a 3-1 deficit and defeated Mounds Park Academy 5-3 in the Section 4A tournament. The Eagles now face Legacy Christian for the section title Thursday at noon at Northwestern University in St. Paul.

Maple Grove ready for tournament opener at state softball
The Maple Grove softball team is preparing for the program’s seventh state tournament appearance Thursday morning. The Crimson face top-seeded Chanhassen in the Class 4A quarterfinals on Thursday morning at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Hopkins and Totino-Grace also qualified for state.

Wayzata tops Mayo in state tennis opener
The Wayzata boys tennis team won a close match in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, defeating Rochester Mayo 4-3 to advance to Wednesday's semifinals against East Ridge. The Trojans won at second, third and fourth singles and second doubles to advance.

Robins win state adapted softball title
Robbinsdale-Hopkins-Mound-Westonka built an 8-1 lead on the way to a 10-7 win over Anoka-Hennepin to win the state P.I. Division championship in adapted softball. It is the Robins’ 10th state title since 2002 but the first since 2014.

Champlin Park baseball edges Centennial in extra innings
Zach Loven’s single in the bottom of the 8th inning scored Anthony Pikula as the Champlin Park baseball team beat Centennial 1-0 in the winners’ bracket final of the Section 5AAAA tournament. The Rebels play for the section title Wednesday at 6:00 pm at CHS Field in St. Paul.

There were plenty of athletes from the northwest suburbs on the medal stand at the Section 6AA track and field finals. The Wayzata girls and boys teams each took second, while several local athletes won their events.

Top seed Maple Grove came into the final round of the Section 5AAAA softball tournament without a loss. Spring Lake Park beat the Crimson 8-4 to force a second game, which Maple Grove won 5-4 to advance to the state tournament.

Maple Grove survives scare in baseball playoff opener
Defending Section 8AAAA baseball champion Maple Grove survived an upset bid in the first round of the 2017 section tournament Wednesday. The Crimson, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, edged No. 7 seed Elk River 5-4 in eight innings.

Wayzata hopes to make a return trip to the state boys lacrosse tournament this season. The Trojans had no trouble in their Section 8 opener, thumping Monticello 17-3.

Local tennis players qualify for state tournament
Armstrong’s Nikita Snezhko defeated Wayzata’s Jon Nudler 6-1, 6-2 to win the Section 5AA singles championship. In the 5AA doubles final Nick Goetz and Matt Hagan beat Michael Deal and John Foley 7-6, 6-1 in an all-Wayzata final. Both singles players and doubles teams qualify for next week’s state boys tennis tournament in Minneapolis.

Hopkins advances to section softball final
Hopkins scored two runs in the third inning and added three more in the sixth inning on the way to an 8-1 win over Edina in the Section 6AAAA softball tournament. The Royals are now in the section final and await their opponent Friday afternoon at Hopkins as they seek a second straight section title.

Luke Polyak scored the winning run on a hit and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Hopkins baseball team edged Armstrong 4-3 in the Section 6AAAA tournament.

The Wayzata synchronized swimming team won its 11th consecutive state championship by winning ten events at the 24th annual state meet in Minneapolis. Stillwater finished a distant second to the Trojans in team points.

Edina outskates Wayzata in boys hockey
Garrett Wait scored three goals and added an assist in leading the Edina boys hockey team to a 6-3 win over Wayzata. The Hornets scored two goals in each period. The loss was the fifth in six games for the Trojans.
