After a thrilling overtime win over Benilde-St. Margaret's in the Section 6AA girls hockey quarterfinals, Wayzata's reward was a game against No. 1 seed Edina. The Hornets scored four goals in the first period on the way to a 6-0 win.

Hopkins/Park falls to Cretin-Derham Hall in 6AA girls hockey
After a lopsided first semifinal in the Section 6AA girls hockey tournament Wednesday, the second game wasn't any closer. Second seed Cretin-Derham Hall scored three goals in the first period on the way to a 7-1 win over Hopkins/Park.

Wright, John lead Rebels to boys basketball win
McKinley Wright scored 21 points and Theo John added 16 as Champlin Park’s boys basketball team downed Blaine 76-62 Tuesday night. The Rebels (20-0) are the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

The Maple Grove girls hockey team will shoot for a second straight section title Friday. The Crimson beat Centennial 5-3 in a good battle in the Section 5AA semifinals Tuesday night.

Local gymnasts set for competitive Section 5AA meet
The Section 5AA gymnastics meet is as deep in talent as it has been in quite some time. Defending champion and host Champlin Park will be pushed by Maple Grove, and Park Center, Wayzata and Rogers are also strong this season.

The Maple Grove wrestling team beat rival Osseo last week to improve to 17-8 in dual matches. The Crimson earned the No. 2 seed behind power St. Michael-Albertville for Saturday's Section 5AAA team tournament.

Stella Haberman scored two goals and added two assists to lift the Hopkins/Park girls hockey team to a 7-2 win over North Metro in the quarterfinals of the Section 6AA tournament. Hopkins/Park meets Cretin-Derham Hall in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Wayzata wins 17th game of the season in girls basketball
Kallie Theisen and Mimi Schrader combined to score 29 second half points leading the Wayzata girls basketball team to a 60-52 win over Eden Prairie. The Trojans (17-5) trailed 28-20 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 40-24 in the second half.

Wayzata beats BSM in OT thriller in section girls hockey
The Wayzata girls hockey team stayed alive in the Section 6AA tournament by pulling out a thriller. The Trojans beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 3-2 in overtime on a goal by defenseman Emily Wisnewski.

Maple Grove won the final five matches of the night to pull away from Osseo and beat the Orioles 49-19 in the teams’ Northwest Suburban Conference match.

Champlin Park’s girls basketball team upset Centennial 64-60 Thursday to move into a second place tie with the Cougars in the Northwest Suburban Conference’s North Division. Allison Gerads scored 23 points to lead the Rebels in scoring.

Alpine skiers vie for spots at state
Spots in the state Alpine ski meet were up for grabs in the Section 5 meet Thursday at Afton Alps. Over a dozen local skiers from several local schools qualified as individuals for the state meet. In addition the Breck boys team qualified for state.

Champlin Park boys, Maple Grove girls win Section 5 Nordic titles
The Champlin Park boys edged Mora by one point to win the Section 5 Nordic ski team title Wednesday at Wirth Park. Both teams advance to the state meet. The Maple Grove girls also won a close one, edging Andover by two points for the team title.

MCA girls rally to beat Legacy
Jaclyn Jarnot scored 27 points to lead the Maranatha Christian Academy girls basketball team to a 73-57 win over Legacy Christian Tuesday night. The Mustangs rallied from down 12 points early in the second half to earn the win, which clinched the MCAA conference title for Maranatha.

McKinley Wright scored 24 points and Marcus Hill added 12 as the Champlin Park boys basketball team defeated Maple Grove 70-60 Monday night in a match-up of the two top-ranked teams in Minnesota Class 4A basketball.

Crimson girls hockey ready for section play
Maple Grove’s girls hockey team is hoping for another long post-season run. The Crimson finished as state runners-up in 2016 and are the second seed, behind Blaine, in the Section 5AA tournament. Maple Grove (19-4-1) play at Wayzata Tuesday night in their regular season finale.

Armstrong-Cooper wins thriller to take NWSC West boys hockey title
The Armstrong-Cooper boys hockey team won a thriller to wrap up the Northwest Suburban Conference's West Division title Saturday. The Wings rallied from a 3-2 deficit to beat Champlin Park 4-3, with Jonah Jangula scoring the game-winning goal with less than a minute left in the third period.

Beijan Newbern scored 24 points to lead the Cooper boys’ basketball team to a 64-54 win over St. Louis Park. It’s the fifth win in the past six games for the Hawks who are in the 3rd place in the Metro West Conference.

The Rebels come into Friday night’s game with Andover undefeated while the Crimson, who host Centennial Friday night, have just one loss on the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.

Armstrong girls, Champlin Park boys win NWSC Nordic titles
The Armstrong girls took four of the top five places on the way to winning the team title at the Northwest Suburban Conference Nordic ski championships Wednesday at Theodore Wirth Park. Champlin Park had five skiers in the top 12 to take the boys title.

The Cooper’s girls basketball team jumped out to an 18-2 lead on the way to a 66-60 win over Bloomington Kennedy. The win gives the Hawks sole possession of first place in the Metro West Conference. Aja Wheeler scored 18 points to lead the Hawks in scoring.

Champlin Park volleyball coach John Yunker is leaving the Rebels program to take a job as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota. Yunker led the Rebels to the past three state volleyball tournaments.

The Armstrong-Cooper boys hockey team is in the driver's seat to win the West division title of the Northwest Suburban Conference. The Wings lead second place Totino-Grace by three points. Armstrong-Cooper has one division game remaining, Saturday against Champlin Park.

Tywhon Pickford scored 25 points and Brad Davison added 24 to lead the Maple Grove boys basketball team to a 70-57 win over Park Center. The Pirates had defeated the Crimson in December for Maple Grove’s only loss of the season.

Wayzata built a 39-point second half lead and coasted to a 76-56 boys basketball win over Minnetonka. Trojans’ senior Gavin Baumgartner scored 23 points, 19 in the first half, to lead both teams in scoring. Wayzata (15-0) plays at Edina Tuesday.

Wayzata, Hopkins take Lake Conference Nordic titles
The Wayzata boys and Hopkins girls Nordic ski teams won the Lake Conference championships on Wednesday at Wirth Park. The Trojans’ Anders Sonnesyn won the boys’ pursuit race while Mara McCollor of Wayzata won the girls’ race. Section Nordic meets are scheduled for the week of February 6th.

Top-ranked Champlin Park remained undefeated in boys basketball with an 85-75 win over Park Center. The Rebels’ 12 point halftime lead was whittled down to two points with six minutes to play before the Rebels extended their lead again for the win. Brian Smith scored 25 points to top the Rebels (13-0).
