Four with northwest metro ties going into MSHSL Hall of Fame
The 2017 class of the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame includes four people with ties to the northwest suburbs. They include early girls hockey standout Krissy Wendell-Pohl of Park Center; recently retired former Wayzata cross country coach Bill Miles; longtime baseball umpire Larry Gallagher of Crystal; and Plymouth's Darrell Thompson, who starred for the Gophers after growing up in Rochester.

Wayzata football opens with new head coach
For the first time since the 1999 season, Wayzata opens practice with a new head football coach. Lambert Brown, who was assistant head coach last fall for the Trojans and has been a head coach at Fridley and Chaska, takes over for Brad Anderson.

The main gym at Park Center High School has a new look. The main floor in the south gym has been resurfaced and repainted with new logos and a return to the school's kelly green color.

Fall sports high school practices begin next Monday for most sports. Activities offices are busy processing registrations for athletes although most of the registration is now done online.

Pro boxer and Osseo native Caleb Truax will make his return to the ring late this month. Truax has had a couple of scheduled bouts postponed or canceled in the past year, so he's eager to box again.

Plymouth-New Hope falls in Wood Bat final
The Plymouth-New Hope 11-year-old all-stars advanced to the championship game of the 11-12 division of the 13th annual Wood Bat Little League baseball tournament. After building an early lead, PNH fell to Coon Rapids-Andover.

Goydos wins 3M tournament in playoff
Paul Goydos birdied the first playoff hole to win the 2017 3M Championship golf tournament at the TPC Twin Cities course. Goydos defeated Gene Sauers in a one-hole playoff for the win.

Youth softball team wins championship for late coach
The Brooklyn Park Flames 10-U girls softball team didn't lose a game during their league season this summer, but did suffer a big loss. Coach Julie Bachand lost her battle with cancer in mid July. The team played on and won the state title over the weekend.

Fusion SC of Plymouth has championship club at USA Cup
The Fusion SC U-15 girls team, based in Plymouth, won the Silver Division title Saturday at the Schwan's USA Cup youth soccer tournament. Fusion beat Edina SC 4-3 in a shootout after a scoreless regulation and overtime.

Wayzata reaches final in sub-state baseball
The Wayzata American Legion baseball team used an 8-run sixth inning to beat Hopkins 13-2 in the semifinal round of the Sub-state 4 tournament. Wayzata then lost to Excelsior in the final.

Anoka edges Osseo in Legion playoffs
Anoka rallied to beat Osseo 4-3 in the Sub-State 11 American Legion playoffs Friday morning. Osseo led 2-0 after three innings before Anoka scored two runs in the fifth inning. Each team scored a run in the 8th inning before Anoka scored the winning run in the top of the 9th. Sub-state playoffs continue across the state through Sunday.

Wayzata, Osseo football break up summer monotony
After a summer of individual and team workouts, football players in the Wayzata and Osseo varsity programs came together for a joint practice at Osseo. Regular fall practices for teams begin Aug. 14 with the first games of the season on Aug. 31.

For the 17th year Armstrong head boys basketball coach Greg Miller has offered a series of summer camps for youth coming up in the Armstrong program. The final of the four weekly camps wrapped up on Thursday.

Hockey League a hit with fans
Da Beauty League is the name of a hockey league that’s drawing a lot of attention from local hockey fans. The 6-team summer league is comprised of NHL, minor and junior league and college players. Games began last Wednesday and continue through August at Braemar Ice Arena in Edina. Several players with local ties are skating in the league.

North Metro Girls Hockey now "Osseo-Park Center"
It was announced this spring that the North Metro girls hockey program would be re-named “Osseo-Park Center” to more accurately reflect the schools from which most of the players are from. The team also has a new head coach, Jeremy Lewis, who is leading the team in summer workouts.

Edina outskates Wayzata in boys hockey
Garrett Wait scored three goals and added an assist in leading the Edina boys hockey team to a 6-3 win over Wayzata. The Hornets scored two goals in each period. The loss was the fifth in six games for the Trojans.
