A Crystal gardener is going "boldly where no one has gone before," creating an out-of-this-world landscape with creativity and spunk. Yes, the Star Trek Enterprise has landed right in the middle of Nancy LaRoche's yard.
"This is Starfleet, the United Federation of Plants," she said.
LaRoche, a Crystal City Council member has taken her love for the intergalactic television series and transformed it into a whimsical garden. She became a Trekkie when she was in college watching her favorite reruns and going to Star Trek conventions.
"I just fell in love with the series. It's campy, but the story lines are pretty good."
LaRoche even has William Shatner's autograph. Beaming with pride she said, "It was an honor to have him sign this. He had a black sharpie marker and he said 'you know, I think I'm going take out the gold marker for this.'"
Her favorite Star Trek characters take command of the garden fleet with several galactic gnomes scattered in the yard.
"Captain Kirk, and this Gorn character where transported to a planet to fight to the death," LaRoche explained.
At times, some aliens have invaded the gnomes.
"They were box elder bug babies and they were just covering, they were swarming, all over, they really like the gnomes," said LeRoche.
Salvia and other perennials add color to the space and red lava rocks mimic the Vulcan planet, while hostas honor the Trekkie crew.
"I planted some scotch moss, in honor of Scotty," laughs LaRoche.
