After surviving a major scare against Chaska in the Class AAAA quarterfinals and then edging a good Wayzata team in the semis, the Champlin Park boys basketball team hoped to close the season with the first state championship in program history.
Apple Valley had other ideas, and for the second time in three seasons the Eagles handed the Rebels a title game loss. The Rebels grabbed a two-point halftime lead and built their biggest lead at 47-41 on a three-pointer from Josiah Strong.
Apple Valley came back strong, though, led by star guard Tre Jones.
The Eagles went ahead for good 56-54 on a driving layup for Jones, and Apple Valley secured the 60-54 win.
