An alleged case of child abuse leads to the death of a 2-year-old Crystal boy.
"Its a horrible tragedy," says Crystal Police Chief Stephanie Revering.
First responders found the toddler injured Saturday evening. He died of his injuries in the hospital on Sunday. Tuesday, police released a photo of the child, but could not yet release his name.
Police arrested Quran Mitchell, 21, of Crystal, the boyfriend of the victim's mother. Mitchell has been charged with second-degree murder.
Saturday night, police and paramedics found the toddler in a home in the 3400 block of Adair Avenue. The toddler was unconscious and bruised.
According to a criminal complaint, the 2-year-old boy suffered injuries that are highly suspicious for child abuse. The medical examiner found retinal hemorrhages consistent with blunt force trauma.
Police say Quran Mitchell admitted hitting the child with a flip-flop sandal but says he never hit him too hard.
"Considering that he had multiple head wounds and head trauma, it doesn't add up," said chief Revering. "And definitely the fact that he admits to hitting him is just tragic enough. Even though he says he did it with a flip-flop that doesn't mean that that's true," she said.
The complaint says a woman living at the home told police Mitchell had been beating the victim since they moved in last December.
Mitchell is due to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
