Brookdale Mall to become Shingle Creek Crossing
It's a project that has been a long time in coming.

Plans are underway to turn the old Brookdale Shopping Center into a new large shopping center named Shingle Creek Crossing. The shopping center's feature tenant: retail giant Wal-Mart. A group of the mall's former lenders chose Gatlin Development Company out of Dickson, Tenn., earlier this month to redevelop the nearly empty property.

"We are very excited with Brookdale Center," said Gatlin President Loren Van Der Slik.

Gatlin Development Company isn't releasing all details about the new project, which is set to be final in four days. They do confirm a 150,000-square foot Wal-Mart to anchor the property. Gatlin also says the current food court space will remain in tact and be renovated to include a small shopping center space. The Sears store will remain.

While the company hasn't released a start date for demolition and construction, they do have an end date in the first quarter of 2012.

The city of Brooklyn Center has been preparing for change in the area. The city has spruced up Bass Lake Road with new lights, sidewalks, and green space.

"I think better days are ahead," said Gary Eitel, Brooklyn Center's director of business and development. "We will bring back a great community shopping center experience and we will bring back that energy to our central commerce area. There will be more positives that will continue to flow from this development."
