Golden Valley shelter rescues animals from hurricane zones
The Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley is helping animals who are dealing with hardships after deadly hurricanes in Texas and now Florida. The nonprofit's Critical Response team sprung into action after the storms hit.

"We weren't sure what to expect," said AHS spokesperson Zach Nugent. "We could tell that the Houston SPCA was just overwhelmed with animals. We were triaging animals that came in as strays, that had injuries, that had illnesses, that had obvious signs of being stranded in flood waters."

The team also worked at another shelter where they cared for horses and donkeys that were rescued from floodwaters. It was a situation that overwhelmed Texas shelters to the point where they ran out of space. To relieve the overcrowding, the Animal Humane Society brought back nearly 100 dogs and cats from down South. The move will help shelters in Texas and Florida to take in more displaced pets.

"We know that we can adopted them out. We have the community, we have the resources and we know we can get those animals into some great homes, here in Minnesota," said Nugent.

Nitro, a 2-year-old Siberian husky, just arrived in Golden Valley. He's one of many pets that are being prepared for adoption. All of the animals were in shelters waiting to be adopted before Hurricane Harvey hit. None are pets who lost their homes during the storm.

The AHS expects to assists more pets in the months to come. For more information on pet adoption: https://www.animalhumanesociety.org/adoption/disaster-relief
