Development along the 610 corridor in Brooklyn Park is kicking into high gear with the addition of hundreds of luxury apartments.
Thursday afternoon, developer Doran companies and Brooklyn Park city officials broke ground on 610 West, a luxury apartment community that will bring 484 rental homes to the 610 corridor just as other businesses and corporations move into the area.
Located one block from the Target Northern Campus and not far from Olympus, which moved in this past spring, the 610 West apartments are already under construction. Three of the four apartment buildings are coming up along the 610 corridor on about 10 acres land purchased from the farming family of Bill Schreiber. Schreiber's great-grandfather first purchased the land in 1867.
"It's probably not too often that you have an opportunity to develop a parcel that's been in family ownership as long as this one," said Schreiber. "What we attempted to do as a family was to look at the need of Brooklyn Park and make sure what went in here was going to fit those needs and also be lasting."
The 610 West project will include a clubhouse as well as two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, as well as a putting green and golf simulator. Two apartment buildings will open in August. The third building will open in spring of 2017 with the fourth building opening after that date.
Brooklyn Park Mayor Jeff Lunde said the new upscale rental housing will compliment the area as other companies move in with good paying jobs.
"We're not done. I say that at every groundbreaking because I know for a fact that anywhere from 6 to 8 businesses are actively looking and in different stages, it might take a couple years," said Lunde.
Develop Kelly Doran said the project offers a mix of urban and suburban lifestyle along the corridor.
"You're going to higher density projects mixed in with low density projects, with corporate facilities, lots of jobs, lots of things here to do. [You can] Walk down to have a bite to eat or cup of coffee or buy your groceries," said Doran.
610 West is within walking distance to the Park Place Promenade retail development in Brooklyn Park.
The apartment project is the first market rate apartments in Brooklyn Park since 1992.
