For much of the night, things weren't going Maple Grove's way in their state Class AA quarterfinal against Prior Lake. The Lakers held a 1-0 lead for a long stretch, and the chances weren't coming for Maple Grove.
Then a handball violation in the penalty area against a Lakers defender gave the Crimson a chance, and Riley Gill converted the PK with 7:43 left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
In the second overtime period, Jeff Clune made a strong run to the goal, dodging defenders before having the ball come loose. A Prior Lake defender attempted to clear it but it banged off Clune's chest and into the net for one of the biggest goals in Crimson soccer history.
Maple Grove now meets Wayzata in the semifinals Monday morning at 8 a.m. You can watch the Maple Grove-Prior Lake game on CCX channels 12 & 799 on Comcast in the northwest suburbs at 10 p.m. Thursday or 1 p.m. Saturday and online at www.ccxmedia.org
