It's a very different feeling coming into the 2017 season for the players and coaches in the Maple Grove softball program.
A year ago, an almost entirely new varsity came into the season with plenty of question marks after making four consecutive trips to the state tournament. The Crimson still had a solid season last spring, winning 16 games and playing two one-run games against Spring Lake Park in the Section 5AAAA championship round.
This season, 11 of their top 12 players return, and that experience is showing up in early practice sessions.
Maple Grove opens the season with back-to-back home games April 11 and April 12 against Champlin Park and Totino-Grace.
