An unassuming sports card shop in Golden Valley is like any good collection—not flashy, but lets the quality speak for itself. When you step inside the doors of Twin Cities Sports Cards
and Papa Hawk’s Sports & Collectibles
, you can see photos, baseball cards, and all sorts of bats, balls, and pucks all kept in meticulous order. It’s almost like a walk through U.S. sports history, with an emphasis on Minnesota sports history.
“I know exactly what people collect, what they are looking for in terms of condition, and it’s a lot of fun helping them build the collection,” says Rob Hunegs, who operates Twin Cities Sports Cards.
He specializes in vintage sports cards, but frequently buys and sells all types of sports cards. The shop was recently located on Hillsboro Avenue in a 600 square foot space, but relocated this year to a building right off Highway 169 on Mendelssohn Avenue.
Mark Hochstaetter operates Papa Hawks Sports and Collectibles in the same location.
“I’m amazed every day because you never know what to expect,” says Hochstaetter. “The stuff comes in every day.”
Mark and Rob buy and sell cards and memorabilia each week. They also participate in card shows and opportunities to introduce younger generations to collecting. The store is something they both have embarked on during retirement years as something that’s fulfilling and fun.
“It’s not the go-go years of the late 80s and 90s. People aren’t in it to make money,” says Hunegs. “Today it’s more because it’s a passion and that’s the same way for Mark and I.”
