This week's Standout Student is artistic, ambitious and academically successful. Maranatha Christian Academy senior Maryam Ikuforiji, is also passionate about helping others.
The well-rounded student excels in all of her classes, but has two favorite subjects.
"I really love doing art, because it's a way to express myself, and I love English because it helps me to become a better communicator," she explained.
The National Honor Society student doesn't shy away from taking a heavy course load. And all the hard work is paying off. Maryam has a 4.2 GPA and at the end of the year she'll graduate with an associate of arts degree, in addition to her high school diploma.
To unwind, she turns to art. For years she has crafted ceramics. This year she started dabbling in paints and drawing.
"With school in general, it can become really stressful especially when you're taking such a large
course load. But with this, you can just find your peace," said Maryam.
Although the high achiever has a lot on her plate, she still finds time to help others. She has participated in mission trips to Mexico, helping out at orphanages since she was a freshman.
"In America, we're always like so obsessed with money and material goods. But it's so good to see people who are so happy, who don't have that much"
Armed with a winning personality and academic success, Maryam hopes to do her part to change the world.
"If I can bring that joy to people, what else can I do in this world? Because if you can just help one person, you can help so many others," she said.
Maryam is still deciding on colleges. Her top three choices are New York University, Northwestern and Columbia University.
