Health Check: Helping new moms
Tucked inside a Maple Grove shopping mall along Maple Grove Parkway is Clinic Sofia. Plymouth resident Renae Frederick came to this OBGYN clinic throughout her pregnancy. She's now a first-time mom who's still learning the ins and outs of raising her new bundle of joy.

"It's not easy being a new mom and the baby blues and stuff like that," Frederick said. "It's a real thing and you've got to ask for help."

Help is one of the many things the staff at Clinic Sofia try to offer, along with a personalized approach.

"We really try to make sure that every patient who comes in is getting the full attention they need," said Dr. David Clay. "All of their questions are answered, and nobody ever feels rushed."

Personalized attention is something that wasn't lacking for Frederick when she gave birth at Maple Grove hospital two weeks ago.

"I would have to say my labor experience was quite unique," she said. "I was in labor for a very long time."

Her son had respiratory issues around the time of birth, but ultimately, she credits Dr. Clay with helping her through the ordeal.

"I met Dr. Clay the morning I went into labor, and he came over to the hospital and he was there for hours with us, and he saved my son's life," she said. "And I'm forever grateful for that."

Saving a baby that's stopped breathing isn't an every day occurrence, but the support Frederick received was beyond her expectations.

"I didn't think that I would feel this good this quickly, and I think a lot of that is due to Clinic Sofia and the support that I've received," Frederick said. "And just knowing I could pick up the phone and talk to a nurse or talk to Dr. Clay or whoever it may be if I need something."

Meanwhile, now that Frederick has given birth, doctors say it's important for her -- and any mother -- to set aside time to take care of their own needs.

"It will affect all aspects of your life if you are struggling with your own health," Dr. Clay said.

It's a message Frederick has heard loud and clear.

"Yeah, you're not weak if you need help," she said. "You're really not. You need sleep. You need support."

Mom and baby are doing fine.

And one other note, with kids now heading back to school, doctors at Clinic Sofia encourage mothers to make self care a priority. That includes doctors visits, rest, exercise, and some well-deserved pampering.
