Cool it! How to save on the AC
Uptown Plumbing, Heating and Cooling is a busy place in June. Even though the stifling heat of the summer hasn't quite hit yet, calls come in from all over the metro asking for help getting air conditioners ready to go.

"Everyone out there is turning on their air conditioning systems," says Josh Savage, owner of Uptown Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. "If there's something wrong with it, they are discovering it right now."

Want to keep your costs down? Here are a few ways.

1. Keep your AC unit in great shape. Old units covered in leaves and debris will have to work harder to generate the air flow to cool your house. "A homeowner can always grab a hose and wash his outside unit down," says Savage.

2. Change your air filter. Not only will routinely changing your air filter help the air quality of your home, but it can help keep the inside of your unit clean and therefore, running more efficiently.

3. Go high tech. Consider a programmable thermostat. "You can save about 10-15 percent on energy use throughout the course of the season," says Savage.  Energy companies also have energy saving devices that can translate to cost-saving measures. Xcel Energy offers the Saver's Switch.

4. Keep shades and blinds closed to block out summer sun.

5. Keep your home the same temperature. "Set it to where you are comfortable and leave it there, just forget about the number," says Savage. "If you know it is going to be hot out, keep it steady."

6. Run appliances in morning/evening.
Don't run heat-generating appliances like ovens, dishwashers, or dryers in the hottest part of the day.

7. Utilize the cool air in your basement. Several Facebook users suggested this tip to us. Use a fan to push cooler air from the basement upward or consider sleeping in the basement on hot summer nights.
