Less than two years after opening, a Brooklyn Park business specializing in reclaimed barnwood is expanding its offerings to meet a growing demand.
Behind the door of Rustic Revival Barnwood, you will find the business is undergoing its own revival.
"People come into the store, and it's something different. There's not a lot of barnwood stores around," said Rhonda Engle, owner of Rustic Revial Barnwood.
With deep family roots that began on a Montana farm, Rhona Engle started her Brooklyn Park business in January 2016 with reclaimed wood from barns in Minnesota and beyond.
"It's always like an adult treasure hunt when you're looking at barns, because you don't know what you're going to find," said Engle.
When Engle opened her shop last year, it was basically a lumber store for do-it-yourselfers: those eager to start a project with reclaimed barnwood, beams, and metal. That itself has not changed, but the popularity of rustic decor continues to grow, and not everyone is into DIY.
"Now [there are] people that just want to come in and just point the finger and say, 'get it done', they're starting to come in and shop and pick out the projects they want us to do," said Engle.
A change in the type of shoppers Engle is serving led to a partnership with interior designer Jeanna Letzring. The two decided to expand Rustic Revival Barnwood to include a design center for custom orders and installs. The business also includes a home decor store with finished barnwood products and other home furnishings from other local vendors.
"It is a complete joy to start with somebody and whether they're going to spend five dollars with me on picking out a picture frame to a whole house build, being on the journey with somebody from beginning to start is just what makes me get up in the morning," said Letzring.
Jen and Dave Kretsch of Maple Grove are currently working with Letzring on designing a barnwood revamp of their basement.
"We're about 80 percent done with our basement, and when the neighbors and friends come over, it's an instant, 'wow'," said Dave Kretsch.
Customers like that keep helping Rustic Revival Barnwood
grow and create.
"I had the dream to start it [the business], but I had no idea it was going to do this, it was the customers that have gotten us this far," said Engle.
